America’s Tapestry
To commemorate and celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026 Stefan Romero developed a needlework project, America’s Tapestry, that incorporates thirteen hand embroidered panels that represent the original 13 colonies. You can read more about this project here.
Stefan will be bringing the panels (Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania) to the Stitching at the MET Gala’s Stitching Room on Saturday, April 26. Our attendees will be encouraged to stitch on the panels.
The Georgia Illustration depicts the Chasseurs Volontaires de Saint Domingue, a Creole military unit composed of free and enslaved blacks as well as whites from modern day Haiti who fought in the Battle of Savannah in 1779. These Haitians were from all walks of life – enslaved, free, wealthy, middle class, including several members of prominent families.
While historical documentation is lacking, Haitian legend asserts that a wounded drummer boy who was a member of the Chasseurs was in fact Henri Christophe, the future king of Haiti. His experience fighting for American Independence may have inspired him to bring freedom to his native people.
